Yesterday I had lunch with a friend and she is fostering a puppy. I had forgotten all the things I needed when Joely was a puppy. Truly puppy brain is a thing. You do forget those years of crazy hahah. As I gathered some of Joely’s things to gift to the new puppy I thought I would write a post on some of the necessities.
First of all you have to have a crate. Crating a puppy makes them feel safe, gives them boundaries and you some peace and quiet. Joely moved pretty quickly out of the crate stage and a nice comfortable bed did the trick.
I had several different leashes that I tried but I loved these the most. These all come in different colors and lengths too so you can decide what is easiest for you. Being in the city more now I like a shorter one to keep her closer to me. When I lived in the snow areas a longer one so she could play. You decide!!
Of course you have to protect your furniture and I found these blankets to be a god send. I have them over my couches, my ottoman, my chairs .. when Joely was a puppy on just about everything. They are waterproof! They come in all sizes and colors too. I even have one in my car now!
You need these Kong toys and fill them with peanut butter for hours of fun and to keep them out of trouble!! One for puppy — kong puppy . Keep more than on in the freezer and that way you have them when you need them. You will be happy you have more than one trust me!!!
Then for the car, these seat belts are wonderful. First time I had Joely in the back seat she was bouncing all over the place and trying to get at me while I was driving. I got one for Jesse too so she and Joely could sit in the back safely. Which leads to the harness for them. The ring in the front connects to the seat belt. There you have it… anything I forgot? Please let me know.. it’s been awhile since I had puppy brain!
PS, treats how can we forget treats… see that post!

Thanks for the fabulous suggestions Ming! I impulsively rescued an adorable 2 month old puppy who’d been dumped on the county road in late October. It’s been a learning experience for us both. :). All of these recommendations are needed and valuable. I had discovered most of them on my on (this is my first puppy) but hadnt yet found a suitable car seatbelt.
Now we’re at 4.5 months and the next chapter is training this high spirited beautiful Labrador-Staffordshire mix (with 9% dachshund!) any tips on how to teach “stay down” and “no jumping” so that it’s fun for all and effective training?

Oh I’m so happy to hear this. I bought the seatbelts several times because Joely chewed through one of them OMG! Her bestie Jesse had the other one. Congrats on your new furbaby!!

The stay down and just lots of practice. The no jumping I was taught to turn my body around each time so they know it’s not a wanted behavior! Good luck!
