Fur Baby: Midnight
Age/breed: Approximately 8-9 years old. Black lab/Rottweiler mix
How long have you had pet?: She was originally my brother”s dog, but he could no longer keep her so she came to live with my parents and I (she was moved from Arizona to California). My brother had her from 2003-2005 and my parents and I have had her from 2005-present.
Problems/Issues: Midnight has always been a happy-go-lucky type of dog. She is so kind, so caring and incredibly sweet. She”s rather large (fluctuates between 90-100lbs) and she”s 8 years old, but you would swear she was a puppy and doesn”t know how big she is. Her spirit/vibration has always been beautiful and shines through. I have another dog, he”s 11 years old and you can tell the difference in attitudes, as he is more blase about everything/has an edgy attitude and she is always excited about everything/always happy.
The last six months have been strange. She”s still somewhat happy go lucky but six months ago, I started noticing she groans/grunts during the night. It is not while dreaming, she is fully awake and even cocks her head towards me and does this very low octave vocal sound (it sounds like a complaint to me). I didn”t know what was wrong. I checked her out, touching her body all over to see if there was a specific spot that was hurting her, but I couldn”t find it.
As the months went by, she started complaining more. Every time she stretched, got up, was lying down. I have no idea where it hurts, what hurts or how to help her. It is very frustrating because I was always worried that my other dog, Duke (german shep/chow mix 11 years old) was going to have worse health, but he”s in good condition so far (knock on wood) and Midnight never showed any signs of deterioration until now.
I took her to the vet, told him her symptoms (I was worried it was cancer or a tumor) but he said she”s large and 9 years old, it is arthritis and I should start her on medication for arthritis for the rest of her life. He never took an xray, he just went off by the same thing I”m telling you, the grunts/groans when lying down, getting up or stretching.
I have been giving her supplements that have glucosamine and msm, but it”s not working as much as I would liked.
I would love to know what her pain is, where it is, what is causing it and if you can help ease her pain. I don”t know exactly how you lovely ladies work, if you can see what medication condition she suffers from, but if you can see it, I would greatly appreciate knowing what it is and any recommendations on how to proceed.
Physical issues: The only thing she has always suffered from is dry skin/thick dandruff. The vet said the reason for her dandruff is a flea allergy. She has the occasional flea but nothing too bad and we try to neutralize the flea problem when we see it
